Canberra, June 3 (ANI): Australian Federal Police (AFP) Chief Commissioner Simon Overland has appealed for calm and a restoration of peace after another Indian student was slashed by one of five attackers.
The 21-year-old nursing student is recovering from being slashed across the chest by a cardboard cutter after being confronted in the Chisholm TAFE car park in Dandenong, in Melbourne’s southeast.
“There is a hysterical edge to this, and assertions we have not done enough on this issue and not taking it seriously is just plain wrong. We have done an enormous amount on this issue on the past 18 months both proactively and reactively,” the Herald Sun quoted Overland, as saying.
Police have appealed for witnesses to the latest attack.
The attack comes as Indian students say they have lost confidence in police to investigate a spate of crimes they say is racially targeted at them.
The issue of racially motivated attacks has raised headlines in India, with New Delhi warning violence against its students in Australia could jeopardise the numbers of Indians coming to Australia to study, earning the country $2 billion a year. (ANI)
