The ‘rebel’ Indian Cricket League’s application for approval and the implication of the Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lankan players would top the agenda in the two-day ICC Executive Board meeting starting on Friday.
Apart from these two important issues, the Board would also receive a report on cricket in Zimbabwe from a task team headed by Dr Julian Hunte, the president of the West Indies Cricket Board, besides discussing promotion of Test cricket.
The March 3 attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore would dominate the debate with the Board discussing its potential effect on the organisation of the 2011 World Cup scheduled in the sub-continent.
“The Board will consider the implications of the incident for the ICC and its Members in both the immediate future and the longer term, including any potential impact on plans for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011,” an ICC statement said.
ICC match referee Chris Broad, who was on duty for the match, will be present on behalf of the match officials to relate his experiences of the incident, make representations and be available to answer any questions the Board may have.
Also present will be Pakistan captain Younis Khan while Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain at the time, will be available from South Africa via telephone hook-up.
The other important issue would be ICL’s application for ICC approval to stage unofficial cricket, a move vehemently opposed by the BCCI.
The Board will also consider a replacement for Michael Holding, who resigned last year, as the media representative on the ICC Cricket Committee.
BCCI President Shashank Manohar would represent India, while IS Bindra will also be there as the ICC Principal Advisor.
ICC Vice-President Sharad Pawar will not be in attendance because of the ongoing election campaign in India, the statement added.
