ICC says champions league not in official calendar

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): The Champions League Twenty20 tournament will not be recognised as part of the official calendar of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the event due to be launched this October is played among domestic teams. This was stated by Haroon Lorgat, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ICC in New Delhi on Thursday.

Lorgat clarified that the Champions League Twenty20 competition set to take place for the first time later this year has not been incorporated into the ICC’s future tours programme.

“We don’t create any domestic events in the future tours programmes, that’s an international programme. What may have been misunderstood in this instance was that last year we were engaged in the challenger round hosting the Champions Trophy and once we had postponed it, we needed to find the window this year and because there was no existing window for the Champions Trophy we had made lots of arrangements with all of the member countries to create that window. In that discussion we had also created for the Champions League because it was already there but there is no domestic event that is stated for the future tours programme,” he said.

The Champions League Twenty20 tourney to be played between October 8 and 23 will see 12 teams in action of which three are from hosts India, two each from Australia, England and South Africa and one each from New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, former Indian cricket team skipper Anil Kumble hoped that India, the defending champions of Twenty20 World Cup will retain the title in the second edition of this tournament due to commence on June 5 in England.

He termed the present Indian combination under M S Dhoni as the most balanced side and has the potential to emerge victorious.
“In my opinion, the Indian team is the best balanced side and you know if they play to their potential then they can definitely come back with the cup. No matter what the conditions are, I think we are the best balanced side if you look at our team I mean it’s really a fantastic side,” said Kumble. (ANI)
