Navratri which is celebrated with such fanfare in Gujarat got additional flavor after the son from Saurashtra, Cheteshwar Pujara stamped his authority of an accomplished batsman and announced his arrival in the test cricket with a fantastically made 72 runs, that too chasing in the second innings of the test match at Bangalore where the pitch was crumbling. The confidence in the batting of Pujara that the team India has was manifest in the fact that he was send to bat ahead of Rahul Dravid and he delivered after a pep-talk by the patriarch of the present Indian cricket team Sachin Tendulkar.
For quite a long time Cheteshwar Pujara was being talked about as a batsman who would be taking the place of Rahul Dravid in the Indian cricket team when Rahul hangs his boot, and indeed the replacement is worth its grain, with the difference in the fact that Pujara also has an array of shots in his arsenal apart from solid defense batting. No wonder, he already has two triple centuries to his account in the domestic cricket. He could also be one of the tallest batsmen the Indian cricket history, after Colonel aka Dilip Vengsarkar.
For quite a long time Gujarat was not having a representation in the Indian test squad after Yusuf Pathan lost his way and now it seems that with the advent of Pujara things would change for Gujarat cricket. Pujara in conjunction with Murali indeed is going to emerge as the replacement for Laxman and Dravid. And they demonstrated their understanding in a big way when they were batting together. Besides, both being the slips players, they exchange quite a lot of views as Dravid and Laxman used to exchange and this could translate into a great spirit of bon homie for the Indian cricket team.
It was because of the batting prowess that Pujara was drafted into the Kolkata Knight Riders; it is altogether a different matter that he did not get much opportunity to display his histrionics. May be, with the fourth season of IPL opening up for bidding, who knows he may get a chance to play for some other team and stamp his authority as has been done by his teammate Murali Vijay through Chennai Super Kings. Pujara has the potential as he was picked up by Dada of Indian cricket aka Sourav Ganguly, who has single handedly been responsible for infusing new blood in Indian cricket and fighting spirit as well.
