Guzarish: could It Become Another Milestone In Ash’s Career?

Teasers of Guzarish that have started making the rounds of music channels have shown Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in a new look, an Anglo-Indian look, dancing to the tune of western tap dance in gay abandon, reminding of the enjoyment that she had expressed while doing the role in Taal. Indeed the looks that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has given to Ash in Guzarish could become the talk of the time once the film releases. The song featuring Ash is Udi… that has been sung seductively by Sunidhi Chauhan accentuating the beauty of Aishwarya in a really mystical manner. Sanjay Leela Bhansali had given a new direction to Ash’s career with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and if one goes by the promos, it seems that after a decade, she could get a new lease of life in her career, post Guzarish.

Though she has completed more than a decade in the film industry, it is for the first time that she is shown as smoking a cigarette. There could be a difference of opinion whether the cigarette in the hand that has been shown is to underline a modern woman, it again is a portrayal that is eschewed and hackneyed. One still does not understand, why when a modern woman is to be shown in the Indian cinema, she needs to have a cigarette in her hands. Indian cinema makers need to come out of this time warp of associating progression with holding a cigarette as some overzealous activist may seek a ban or deletion of the scene that could destroy the continuity of the film.  Deepika Padukone was also shown smoking in Kartik Calling Kartik and it was not liked by the audience at all. So, how would the fans react to this portrayal is a million dollar question!

Apart from such inconsistencies, Guzarish seems to be a film that has luxury written all over it, and it could emerge out to be a love story that has the potential of shocking our beliefs and questioning the ideals to which we still aspire for. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been rather partial to Goa in giving it a different interpretation through his cinematic oeuvre, as he did with Khamoshi. , One only hopes that Guzarish would add one more feather in his cap by providing a respectable identity to the citizens of Goa.  Let’s hope it becomes a commercial success for Bhansali.
